YOU Are Miss Black Georgia USA 2011!

Hello Everyone!

We are recruiting contestants for the next Miss Black Georgia USA pageant! No, I'm not slowing down, and my reign is far from over, but we all know that I won't be your queen forever. I must pass the torch in November. The next queen could be you! Scholarship money, public exposure, networking opportunities, local celebrity for a year, are only A SMALL PORTION of what you will receive should you win the title.

Now, I know what you're thinking....

1) It's going to be expensive.
-Well, it is $175 to enter before May 1. Here's what you do. Tell your family and friends what you are doing, and believe me......they will be happy to help. When I told everyone that I was doing a pageant, everyone was so intrigued. They wanted to give. I did not pay for anything. Not the dress, shoes, makeup, jewelry, etc. So, don't worry about the money. It will be there.

2) I'm not a pageant girl.
-Let me tell you a secret. Come close so you can hear..........I'm not either. Lol! This was my FIRST pageant. So, when I say, "You can win your first pageant," I'm not just saying it to be saying it. I am living proof. I grew up playing basketball, volleyball, softball, swimming, and track. I was NOT into pageants. However, now I know that I can venture into a different kind of activity and be successful, and so can you.

3) I have a full-time job and no time to be Miss Black Georgia.
-The director and the board will work with your schedule. I am a third grade teacher, so I cannot do any appearances during the day. My director only schedules events when YOU are available. After all, you're the queen.

4) I'm too shy and scared to do a pageant.
-Preparing for the pageant and participating will bring you out of your shell. I promise! Once the pageant has come and gone, you will feel more comfortable in front of an audience...whether you win the title or not.

So, the decision is made! You have everything it takes to compete and win! I'll be looking for you!

Spring Break!

I am SO looking forward to spring break! I need it. Being a teacher, having this title, preparing for a figure competition, and having a life takes a lot of time and energy. But, thankfully, I will be able to focus on me during spring break next week.

Not that I haven't enjoyed being busy. I may be tired all of the time, but honestly, that's all that I know.....busy, busy, busy, on the go, all the time. Lol! I'd rather be busy than bored. Let's see what have I been doing lately?.......

I spoke at a couple of events. The Sister of Today and Tomorrow had a brunch for Women's History Month, and I was a guest speaker. Of course I spoke about health and fitness because that's what I do! I also had the opportunity to speak at the Queens of Radio bruch and gala earlier in the month. I'm not gonna lie......I get really nervous when I have to speak in front of a crowd of adults. Because I am a teacher, I am most comfortable in front of children.

I judged the Miss Fort Valley State University pageant this past weekend. Let me tell you, it was a BEAUTIFUL production! Congratulations to the top three ladies. The top three will go on to campaign for a week. Then the students will vote on who the new queen of the campus will be. How exciting!

Anyway, back to spring break! My parents asked me if I'm going home. I laughed at that one. Even though I've been here for almost three years now, I don't think that they've accepted the fact that Atlanta is my home. They think that I'm just college, and I'm supposed to come home every chance I get. I love my family, and I love Indianapolis (Naptown!), but......no. Maybe Memorial Day weekend.

I am going to workout, relax, write, workout, relax, and write some more. Oh, and I need to do my taxes. Lol. You may see me jogging in downtown Atlanta since the weather is getting warmer. But, for those of you who are going to the beach, have fun...enough for you and me. Be safe, stay with your friends, and don't go off by yourself with a stranger. If you must, at least let someone know where you are going......even if you think you'll only be gone for a short period of time.

Again, enjoy life, enjoy spring break, and I'll talk to you all later!

My Next Figure Fitness Competition is Coming!

Hello Everyone! I know it's been awhile since you've heard from me, but here I am. Well, I want to tell you all about my preparation for my second figure fitness competition that's going to be on June 5 (the day after my birthday). I competed back in October of 2008, but I didn't place. Well, I'm going for the gold this time.

So, when I competed in 2008, my weight was 149 lbs. Now, I know that may sound like a lot or a little on the thick side, but I have NEVER looked like the weight that shows on the scale. I'm taller than the average female, and I have muscle. Well, my wonderful trainer wants me to get down to 140 for June. Currently, I am 160, so I have a long way to go, but I know I can do it.

Well, let me tell you a little about my workouts. So, I workout with my trainer, Megan May, at Gold's Gym Peachtree Center twice a week. She kills me everytime! Well, on the other days, I do cardio. Here are some of the things I may do. Let me know if you have any great exercises. We can exchange.

#1 - Treadmill
2 min warmup, incline 2.0, speed 4.0
1 min forward, incline 5.0, speed 4.0
1 min backward, incline 5.0, speed 3.0
Repeat forward speed 4.0 and backward speed 3.0, increasing incline 1.0 after each backward.
Do for 40 min total.

#2 - Potluck
15 min on the stepper
--5 min at Level 8, long steps
--5 min at Level 12, short steps
--5 min at Level 15, alternate short and long steps

15 min on the spin bike
--2:1 intervals - 2 min sitting, 1 min standing climb with increased tension

15 min on elliptical
--Set it for Random, Level 10
--Alternate 5 min forward and 5 min backwards

I'll post some more later. Let me know what you think. I could also use some great recipes. I'm a VERY picky eater.

Back in the Gym

Hey Everyone!

Well, what's been going on with me and the reign? Recently I was in Macon, GA with Miss Black Georgia Teen for a Meet and Greet. Those in attendance were people in the community who were interested or knew someone interested in being a contestant for the next pageant. Some of the ladies on the Fort Valley State University court came as well.

Candi Gaul (Miss Black Georgia Teen) and I both spoke about our reign, our platforms, and the organizations we work with. We both displayed our talent. I sang the song that helped me to shine on the night of the pageant, Get Here by Oleta Adams. It was our first Meet and Greet, and I really enjoyed it. I like talking with different people.....what can I say, I'm a people person.

Well, I've been working my way back into the gym preparing for Ronelle's Challenge for CHOICES on June 5. I will be competing in the figure novice division in the National Gym Association (NGA) federation. Those girls come ready to win, and I'll have my game face on, too. I will admit, getting back into the intense routine of working out and eating right ALL THE TIME is difficult. But, it's for a good cause, and in the end....I'll have the body of my dreams.

Valentine's Day is right around the corner, and I hope that everyone will enjoy that day. For those of you who are in a committed relationship, enjoy the night, and remember to show your man/woman how much you love him/her throughout the year as well. For those of you who are enjoying the single life, enjoy your friends, children, and loved ones. Valentine's Day should never be a time for anyone to pout. If you are still waiting for that special someone, just be patient. He/she will come into your life when you least expect it.

Thank you for reading, and I'll talk to you all next time.

What I've Been Doing

So, it's been awhile since you all last heard from me. I apologize.....it's been busy. I'm trying to finalize my role with C.H.O.I.C.E.S., trying to find places to volunteer, making a few appearances, trying to stay in shape at the gym, and I do have a job. :) WHOO!

Anyway, I love it all. I got a chance to be on a panel of queens for one of the contestant sessions for the Miss Phi Beta Sigma pageant at Georgia State University. The queens and I discussed our experiences, some tips, and secrets to pageantry. It was a lot of fun, and I think it was helpful to the contestants.

On Saturday, I returned to KIPP South Fulton Academy for another mentoring session for the ME7 Girls Program. The topic was The Worth of ME. We had a nice discussion. We talked about the importance of knowing the value of your body, the pressures that society places on us, and pressure from peers and boys.

I have a few events this week. On Monday and Tuesday, C.H.O.I.C.E.S. begins their Sisters in the Lite program at Douglass High School. This is a program to help change the lifestyles of 20 teenage girls. It will last for 12 weeks. It will begin with a guest speaker, a workout, and a nutritional session with nutritionists from Georgia State University. I may lead a workout or two. :)

On Wednesday, I will be a judge in the Miss Cross Keys pageant. On Thursday, I will be attending an event celebrating the release of Eric Snow's book. The Trumpet Awards are at the end of this month as well. I believe I will be in attendance there as well.

Well, this is all for now. Thanks for keeping up, and invite your friends to follow me! Talk to you next time!

Ready For 2010!

Happy New Year Everyone!

Hello again, and I hope everyone had a great holiday. I really enjoyed my holiday break. I got a chance to go home to Indiana, and I just had the best time. Because there are no more small children in my family, the excitement of gift giving and doing all the cute holiday things just wasn't there. But, that made it easier to focus on the true meaning of the Christmas holiday. Nevertheless, I had a great time.....and yes, my dad had my wrapping all of his gifts for his friends and colleagues.

Well, I'm ready for 2010! As I stated in my previous blog, 2009 was so wonderful, and I'm so ready for this year. Ever since I moved here to Georgia in 2007, I've said that my 26th year is going to be full of larger than life blessings. Well so far, I've been correct. With graduating with my masters and winning this title, the huge blessings have only begun to arrive.

A project that I am working on is my second figure fitness competition. For those of you who don't know what that is, allow me to explain. I first want to say that figure fitness is NOT bodybuilding. It is the softer, more feminine side of that. Yes, we have to work out hard, but instead of being bulky, we have to be extremely lean. We don't do the manly poses that bodybuilders do, but we wear heels, makeup, and jewelry and pose in a feminine manner. We are judged on our physique, grace, and beauty.

Well, I first competed in October of 2008 with Supernatural Bodybuilding & Fitness (SNBF), but unfortunately, I did not place. I didn't get serious with my diet when I should have. But, this time, it's going to be different. I am looking for individuals and businesses to make a pledge to donate for my participating in the show (we call competitions shows as well). The catch is, the higher I place, the more they donate. I will have more information out in the future stating the different levels of pledge donations people and businesses can make. All of the money will go to a non-profit organization called C.H.O.I.C.E.S., which stands for Centers Helping Obesity In Children End Successfully. This is the organization that I will be working with throughout my reign. I have not picked a show to do, but since I began with SNBF back in 2008, I feel the need to conquer it. I will keep you posted.

Other than that, I'm just trying to balance, work, my queenly duties, and writing. Many don't know, but I'm also an aspiring children's trade book author. So, I've been researching many publishing companies. Let me know if you have any suggestions for ones that I should look at. But, that's a whole nother blog.

Until next time.....ttyl! :)

2009 Was Terrific!

Well, 2009 is just about over, and it was a great year! I graduated from Georgia State University with my masters in Reading, Language, and Literacy Education, and I won my first pageant. I'd say that things are going well.

Recently, Miss Black Georgia Teen, Candi Gaul, and I volunteered with the wrapping of Christmas gifts for children, and it was really fun. When I lived at home, my job was always to wrap the presents. My dad would leave a bunch of presents on the table with a sticky note on it, telling me who to wrap it for.

2010 will bring even more blessings and excitement into my life. I am teaming up with C.H.O.I.C.E.S., a non-profit organization that promotes health awareness to the youth. C.H.O.I.C.E.S. stands for Center Helping Obesity in Children End Successfully. They have wonderful programs for children and teens that I will be helping out with. I will be sure to keep you posted, but visit their website in the mean time. http://www.choicesforkids.org/.

I also have an awesome fundraising idea for C.H.O.I.C.E.S. I will bring the details in the near future. I'm just glad that it's Christmas break, and I get a nice, long, 2-week break from work. I know all the teachers out there can lift their hands to that one. :) I plan on resting and workout out hard. We have a photo shoot right after the new year, and I want to make sure I look right.

I am currently in Indianapolis, IN for the holidays. That's where I'm from. I'm so glad there's not a lot of snow. It's really beautiful to look at, but it just gets in the way. I still have some childhood friends here, so I can't wait to visit them. My three best friends from Indy are here, and we're never all in the same city at once, so I'm very happy about that. I'm sure I'll be wrapping presents for my dad, too. Well, that's all for now....until next time.

Merry Christmas! Happy Kwanzaa! Happy Hannukkah! Happy New Year!
